PAUL CHANSELECTED WORKS

chan_selectedworks_13.jpg

Published by Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager
With an essay by Daniel Birnbaum
Design: Office for Design, Basel

The catalog is published on the occassion of the Schaulager exhibition “Paul Chan – Selected Works.” The overwhelming wealth of images in the “Selected Source Files” was worked out by Paul Chan in collaboration with the designers as a “picture book in a book.” The collages of heterogeneous material testify to the wide-ranging sources of inspiration and the visual context that underlie this artist’s oeuvre. Daniel Birnbaum’s compelling essay details the concept of the exhibition. Photographs of the installations on view in the exhibition, a list of works, and comments on the groups of work complete the publication.

First edition 2014, 388 pages, illustrated in color, texts in German and English, softcover
Available at Schaulager: CHF 27

Published by Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager, and Badlands Unlimited
Edited by George Baker and Eric Banks, with Isabel Friedli and Martina Venanzoni
With an introduction by George Baker
Design: Kobi Benezri, Zurich

Paul Chan is active not only as an artist; he is also an astute and critical writer. He has published in such journals as Artforum, October, and Texte zur Kunst. Chan writes about aesthetics and politics as well as theoretical and practical issues within the context of art. In addition, he discusses other artists and authors who are personally important to him in his work, for instance, Chris Marker, Sigmar Polke, or Michel Foucault. Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager, and Paul Chan’s own press, Badlands Unlimited, have now worked together to produce the artist’s first collection of selected writings. The wit and originality of the texts in this reader will captivate anyone who is interested in contemporary art.

Volumes consists of 1005 book covers, overpainted by the artist after removing the content of the books. All 1005 book covers are reproduced in the lavish publication New New Testament, issued by Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager, in collaboration with Badlands Unlimited.
